Joop

Joop is a Dutch pet form of Johannes, which descends from the Latin Iohannes and ultimately from the Hebrew Yohanan, meaning God is gracious. It has been a familiar given name in the Netherlands for centuries, carried by numerous ordinary bearers as well as public figures such as Dutch politician Joop den Uyl, who served as Prime Minister in the 1970s. Related forms include the fuller Dutch name Johan and the international variants John, Jan, and Hans.
