Jorma

Jorma is a Finnish given name that developed as a vernacular adaptation of the Hebrew name Jeremias (the Finnish and Scandinavian form of Jeremiah), meaning something along the lines of "God will exalt" or "God will loosen." It became established as a distinctly Finnish name in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as part of the broader cultural movement favoring nativized forms of biblical and classical names. The composer Jorma Kaukonen, a founding member of Jefferson Airplane, brought the name some international recognition. Related forms include Jere and Jeremia.
