masculine · Finnish origin
Jorma is a Finnish masculine given name, traditionally regarded as a Finnish form of Jeremiah, which derives from the Hebrew Yirmeyahu, meaning "Yahweh will exalt" or "Yahweh has appointed." It has been in use in Finland since at least the nineteenth century and became firmly established as a distinctly Finnish name. The musician Jorma Kaukonen, co-founder of Jefferson Airplane, is one internationally recognized bearer. Related forms include the Finnish variant Jere and the Scandinavian Jeremia.
