Joseph

Joseph comes from the Hebrew name Yosef, derived from the root yasaf, meaning "he will add" or "God will add." In the Hebrew Bible, Joseph is the eleventh son of Jacob and Rachel, sold into slavery in Egypt before rising to become a powerful administrator; in the New Testament, Joseph is the husband of Mary and earthly father of Jesus. The name spread throughout Europe through both Jewish tradition and Christian veneration, becoming firmly established in English, French, German, and many other languages.
