Katrin is a German and Scandinavian short form of Katharina, itself derived from the Greek name Aikaterine, whose root meaning is debated but commonly linked to the Greek word katharos, meaning pure. The name gained widespread popularity throughout medieval Europe largely through the veneration of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a fourth-century martyr.
