Klara is the Scandinavian, German, and Slavic form of the Latin name Clara, derived from the Latin word clarus, meaning bright or clear. The name spread widely across medieval Europe through the influence of Saint Clare of Assisi, the thirteenth-century founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, known in Latin as Clara. Klára serves as the Hungarian, Czech, and Slovak adaptation, while Klāra is the Latvian form, and the original Latin-rooted Clara and French Claire remain the most widespread cognates internationally.
