Kristel is a feminine given name of Greek origin, derived ultimately from the Greek word krystallos, meaning ice or clear ice, and by extension crystal. It developed as a Low German and Dutch diminutive or variant form of Kristina and Christine, which themselves trace back through Latin and Greek to the name Christiana, meaning follower of Christ. The name has been most common in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Estonia, and gained wider visibility partly through the Belgian actress Sylvia Kristel.
