Lenora is an English given name that developed as a shortened form of Eleonora, itself a medieval Latinization of the Old French Alienor, whose ultimate root is debated but may derive from the Germanic element alja, meaning other or foreign. The name gained broader use in the English-speaking world during the nineteenth century alongside related forms such as Lenore, Eleanor, and Leonora. Edgar Allan Poe's 1831 poem Lenore helped lend the name a romantic and literary association that contributed to its appeal.
