Lewis is an English form of Louis, itself derived from the Old Frankish name Chlodovech, composed of the elements hlud, meaning famous or renowned, and wig, meaning war or battle. The name was borne by numerous French kings and spread widely through medieval Europe following the Norman Conquest of England. Notable bearers include the explorer Meriwether Lewis and the author C.
