Loïc is a Breton form of the Latin name Ludovicus, itself derived from the Old Frankish name Chlodovech, composed of the elements hlud, meaning famous or renowned, and wig, meaning warrior or battle. The name spread widely through medieval Europe via its association with Frankish and French royalty, most notably the many French kings named Louis. Loïc emerged as a distinctly Breton adaptation and has been popular in Brittany and broader French-speaking regions since the twentieth century.
