Mårten is the Swedish and Norwegian form of Martin, derived from the Latin name Martinus, itself built on Martis, the genitive form of Mars, the Roman god of war, giving the root meaning "of Mars" or "belonging to Mars." The name spread widely across medieval Europe through the veneration of Saint Martin of Tours, the fourth-century Gallo-Roman bishop celebrated for sharing his cloak with a beggar. In Scandinavian tradition, Mårten is associated with Mårtensgås, the feast of Saint Martin held on November 11, when roast goose is traditionally eaten.
