Māra is a Sanskrit and Pali name meaning death, destruction, or the one who kills, derived from the root mṛ, to die. In Buddhist tradition, Māra is the name of the demonic deity who tempted Siddhartha Gautama beneath the Bodhi tree, embodying illusion, desire, and the obstacles to enlightenment. In Latvian and Lithuanian tradition, Māra is an entirely separate name, a vernacular form of Mary ultimately rooted in the Hebrew Miryam, and is associated with a protective goddess figure in Latvian folk religion.
