Małgosia is a Polish hypocoristic, or affectionate diminutive, of Małgorzata, the Polish form of Margaret, which derives from the Greek Margaritēs meaning pearl. The name ultimately traces back through Latin Margarita to a Greek word borrowed from Persian or Sanskrit sources referring to the lustrous gem. Małgosia is widely used in Poland as an informal everyday form of address for bearers of the full name Małgorzata, much as Maggie serves English speakers.
