Maddison is a modern English given name transferred from the surname Madison, which originated as a medieval patronymic meaning son of Maud, Maud itself being a contracted form of the Old French and Norman name Mahaut, a variant of Matilda. Matilda derives from the Old High German elements maht, meaning strength or might, and hild, meaning battle. The surname gained widespread use as a feminine given name in the late twentieth century, partly popularized by the 1984 film Splash. Madisyn and Madison are common spelling variants.
