Maia

Maia is a name of ancient Greek origin, derived from the root meaning mother or nurse, closely related to the Greek verb meaning to foster or care for. In Greek mythology, Maia was the eldest and most beautiful of the Pleiades, the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione, and she became the mother of Hermes by Zeus. The Romans identified her with an Italic goddess of spring and growth, and the month of May takes its name from her. Variant forms and cognates include Maya, Maja, and the Latinate Maea.
