Mandy originated as an English pet form of Amanda, which derives from the Latin gerundive amanda, meaning worthy of love or lovable. It began appearing as an independent given name in the twentieth century, particularly popular in Britain during the 1960s and 1970s. The name gained cultural visibility through the 1957 film and Barry Manilow's 1974 hit song, both titled Mandy. Amanda remains the primary form, with Mandi and Manda serving as additional variants.
