Margrit

Margrit is a German and Romansh form of Margaret, ultimately derived from the Greek margaritēs, meaning pearl, which itself was borrowed from a Persian or Sanskrit source. The name spread widely across medieval Europe through the cult of Saint Margaret of Antioch and the popularity of queens and noblewomen bearing the name. Margrit is the characteristic Swiss German spelling and remains in use particularly in German-speaking Switzerland. Closely related forms include Margarete, Margareta, Margret, and Greta.
