Marketta is a Finnish feminine form of Margaret, which traces back through Latin Margarita and Greek Margaritēs to a Persian root meaning pearl. The name arrived in Scandinavia through the Christian tradition and became established in Finland as a vernacular adaptation of the widely venerated saint's name.
