Marko

Marko is the South Slavic, Finnish, Estonian, and Basque form of Marcus, which derives from the Latin name Marcus, itself likely connected to Mars, the Roman god of war. The name spread widely through Europe as a result of the Christian veneration of Saint Mark the Evangelist, author of the second Gospel. In South Slavic tradition, Marko is closely associated with the legendary medieval hero Marko Kraljević, a celebrated figure in Serbian and other regional epic poetry.
