Marusya is a Russian and Ukrainian diminutive of Maria, itself derived from the Hebrew Miryam, whose meaning is debated but commonly linked to roots suggesting "beloved," "rebellious," or "drop of the sea." The name has deep roots in Slavic folk culture and appears frequently in traditional songs, fairy tales, and literature as an archetypal village heroine.
