Maryla

Maryla is a Polish diminutive of Maria, itself the Latin and Greek form of the Hebrew name Miryam, whose precise root meaning is debated but is often interpreted as meaning beloved, sea of bitterness, or drop of the sea. As an affectionate short form, it developed naturally within Polish naming tradition alongside other diminutives such as Marysia and Marynia. The name gained literary and cultural resonance in Poland partly through Maryla Wereszczakówna, the great love of the Romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz, which helped fix it in the Polish cultural imagination.
