Matthew is an English given name derived from the Hebrew Mattityahu, meaning gift of God, composed of the elements mattan, meaning gift, and Yah, a shortened form of the divine name Yahweh. The name passed into Greek as Matthaios and into Latin as Matthaeus before reaching English through medieval usage. It is most closely associated with the first-century apostle and evangelist Matthew, traditionally credited with authorship of the first Gospel, which made the name popular throughout the Christian world.
