Maurie is an English familiar form of Maurice, which derives from the Latin name Mauritius, itself based on Maurus, meaning "dark" or "Moorish," originally referring to someone from the Roman province of Mauretania in North Africa. The name entered widespread use in medieval Europe partly through the veneration of Saint Maurice, a third-century martyr and leader of the legendary Theban Legion.
