Nóra is a Hungarian and Irish feminine name, a short form of Eleonóra or Honóra, whose ultimate roots trace back either to the Greek Helénē, meaning torch or light, or to the Latin honor, meaning dignity and esteem. The Irish form Nóra has long been a staple of Gaelic naming tradition, often interchangeable with Nóirín, its diminutive. It gained wider European recognition partly through Henrik Ibsen's 1879 play A Doll's House, whose protagonist Nora became a symbol of female independence. Eleanor, Honora, Norah, and Leonora are closely related forms found across various languages and traditions.
