Pier

Pier is the Italian and Dutch form of Peter, derived from the Greek Petros, itself a translation of the Aramaic Cephas, meaning rock or stone. The name was popularized throughout the Christian world by the apostle Simon Peter, to whom Jesus gave the name as a symbol of his foundational role in the church. Pier has been borne by notable Italian figures including the Renaissance poet Pier Paolo Pasolini and the sculptor Pier Jacopo Alari-Bonacolsi.
