Pierrot

Pierrot is a French diminutive of Pierre, itself the French form of the Latin Petrus, derived from the Greek Petros meaning rock or stone. The name became widely known through the Commedia dell'arte tradition, where Pierrot designated a stock comic character, typically depicted as a naive, lovesick clown dressed in white. This theatrical figure became a beloved icon in French pantomime and later inspired Romantic and Symbolist artists and poets throughout the nineteenth century.
