Raghnall

Raghnall is an Irish and Scottish Gaelic name derived from the Old Norse name Rögnvaldr, composed of the elements regin, meaning counsel or decision, and valdr, meaning ruler or power, giving an overall sense of wise ruler or mighty counsellor. The name was brought to Ireland and Scotland through Viking contact and settlement during the medieval period, where it was adapted to fit Gaelic phonology. It has been used as a Gaelic equivalent of the Norse Rögnvaldr and the Anglo-Norman Reynold or Ronald. Related forms include Ragnall, Ranald, and Ronald, the last of which became the most widespread English-language descendant of the same Norse root.
