Rory

Rory is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name Ruairí (also spelled Ruaidhrígh or Ruaidrí), derived from the elements ruad, meaning red, and rígh, meaning king, giving the overall sense of red king or great king. The name was borne by several early Irish and Scottish kings, most notably Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, the last High King of Ireland in the twelfth century. It has long been common throughout Ireland and Scotland and remains popular in both countries today. Closely related forms include the Scottish Gaelic Ruaraidh and the Latinised Roderick, though Roderick itself has a separate Germanic origin.
