Rory is an anglicization of the Old Irish name Ruairí (also spelled Ruaidhri), composed of the elements ruadh, meaning red, and rí, meaning king, giving the overall sense of red king or great king. The name was borne by several prominent figures in medieval Ireland and Scotland, including Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, the last High King of Ireland. It remains common throughout Ireland and Scotland and has spread widely into the English-speaking world.
