Rutt is an Estonian feminine name functioning as a vernacular short form of the biblical name Ruth, which derives from the Hebrew root re'ut, meaning companion or friend. It came into Estonian use as a locally adapted equivalent of the widespread European name borne by the Moabite woman in the Hebrew Bible whose loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi made her an enduring symbol of devotion.
