Saška is a South Slavic feminine (and sometimes masculine) diminutive form rooted in the Greek name Alexandros, meaning defender of men, transmitted through the Slavic short form Sasha and ultimately from the full Slavic adaptation Aleksandar or Aleksandra. It is widely used in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and neighboring countries as an affectionate everyday form of those longer names. The masculine Russian equivalent Sasha and the feminine Sascha found in German-speaking countries share the same diminutive origin.
