Scarlette is an English variant spelling of Scarlett, derived from the Old French word escarlate, itself borrowed from Medieval Latin scarlatum, denoting a vivid red cloth or dye. The name came into use as a given name partly through association with the color scarlet and gained widespread popularity following Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel Gone with the Wind, whose protagonist is Scarlett O'Hara. Scarlett, Scarlette, and Scarletta are all found in contemporary use across English-speaking countries.
