masculine · Slovene origin
Sebastjan is the Slovene form of Sebastian, derived from the Latin Sebastianus, which in turn comes from the Greek Sebastianos, meaning "from Sebaste," a city in Asia Minor whose name derives from the Greek sebastos, meaning "venerable" or "august." The Greek sebastos was itself a calque of the Latin augustus, used as an honorific for emperors. The name was widely adopted in Christian Europe largely through the veneration of Saint Sebastian, a third-century Roman martyr. Related forms include Sebastian in English and German, Sebastián in Spanish, Sébastien in French, and Sebastião in Portuguese.
