Serena derives from the Latin adjective serenus, meaning calm, clear, or tranquil, often used in classical texts to describe fair weather or a peaceful disposition. It was borne in early Christian tradition by a saint venerated as the wife of the emperor Diocletian, which helped preserve the name through the medieval period. The name has been in continuous use in Italian and English contexts and gained wider modern prominence through the American tennis champion Serena Williams. The French form Séréna is a close cognate, and the masculine equivalent Serenus also appears in the ancient Roman record.
