Shelagh

Shelagh is an anglicized spelling of the Irish name Síle, itself the Irish form of Cecilia, which derives from the Latin family name Caecilia, connected to the Roman clan name Caecus meaning blind. The name was brought to Ireland by Anglo-Norman settlers in the medieval period and became thoroughly naturalized in Irish culture. Shelagh is primarily found in Ireland and among the Irish diaspora in Britain, and sits alongside the more common anglicized form Sheila as well as the original Irish Síle.
