Sophy is an English and French variant of Sophia, derived from the ancient Greek word sophia, meaning wisdom. The name was widely used in early modern Britain and appears frequently in eighteenth-century literature, most notably as the name of the heroine in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Émile. It shares its root with the philosophical term philosophy, literally love of wisdom, and with the title Sophi or Sophy historically applied to Persian shahs of the Safavid dynasty. Related forms include Sophia, Sophie, and Sofia.
