Stan

Stan is a short form of Slavic compound names beginning with the element stan, meaning "become" or "stand, be established," most famously represented in the Polish and South Slavic name Stanisław, which combines this root with slav, meaning "glory." The name was borne by two Polish saints, most notably Saint Stanislaus of Kraków, an eleventh-century bishop and martyr who became the patron saint of Poland, greatly spreading the name's use throughout Central and Eastern Europe. In English-speaking countries, Stan gained independent popularity as a given name in its own right during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, often also serving as a short form of Stanley.
