Stan

Stan is an English short form of Stanley or Stanislav, though it has also long functioned as an independent given name across several European traditions. As a Slavic name, it derives from the Old Slavic element stan, meaning camp or dwelling place, and in Polish and Romanian use it frequently serves as a diminutive of Stanisław or Stanislav. In Dutch it similarly operates as a short form of Stanislav or occasionally Constant. The name gained renewed cultural prominence in the English-speaking world partly through comedian Stan Laurel and later through the Eminem song Stan, which introduced the word into popular vocabulary as a term for an obsessive fan. Stanislav, Stanisław, and Stanley are the most closely related full forms.
