Symeon

Symeon is the Greek and Latin form of the Hebrew name Shim'on, derived from the root shama, meaning to hear or to listen. It appears in the Old Testament as the name of the second son of Jacob and Leah, and in the New Testament as an early form used for the apostle Simon Peter as well as the devout man Simeon who recognized the infant Jesus in the temple. The name was borne by several saints and Byzantine emperors, most notably Symeon I of Bulgaria in the tenth century. Modern forms and cognates include Simeon, Simon, and Shimon.
