Terézia is the Hungarian and Slovak form of Theresa, a name of uncertain ancient origin, most likely derived from the Greek toponym Therasia, referring to the Greek island of that name or possibly to Taras (modern Taranto) in southern Italy. The name gained wide Christian devotion through Saint Teresa of Ávila, the influential sixteenth-century Spanish mystic and Doctor of the Church, and later through Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, who ruled in the eighteenth century, made the form Terézia especially prominent in Central Europe.
