Virginia is a Latin name derived from the Roman family name Virginius, itself related to the Latin word virgo, meaning maiden or virgin. It was borne in Roman legend by Verginia, a plebeian girl whose tragic fate inspired the overthrow of the decemvirs, as recounted by Livy. The name gained wide use in the English-speaking world partly through the Virginia colony of North America, named in honor of Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen. Related forms include Virginie in French and Virgínia in Portuguese and Spanish.
