Wendy is an English name famously coined, or at least popularized, by the Scottish author J. M. Barrie for the character Wendy Darling in his 1904 play Peter Pan, derived from the affectionate nickname Fwendy, used by a young friend of Barrie's, Margaret Henley. It is sometimes linked to the Welsh name Gwendolyn or the element gwen, meaning white or fair, though this connection is debated. The name spread rapidly throughout the English-speaking world following the success of Peter Pan and has remained in common use since the early twentieth century. Variant forms include Wendi and Wendie.
