Aliyah

Aliyah is a Hebrew name derived from the root alah, meaning to ascend or go up, conveying the sense of elevation or rising to a higher place. In Jewish tradition the word carries deep religious and cultural significance, referring both to the honor of being called to read from the Torah and to the act of immigrating to the Land of Israel. The name has been widely adopted across Arabic-speaking communities as well, where the related form Aliya or Aaliya shares the same Semitic root. Variants and cognates include Alia, Aaliyah, and Aliya, and the name gained broad international recognition in part through the American singer Aaliyah in the late twentieth century.
