The name Aloïse is a French and Occitan feminine form of the Old High German name Aloysius, itself derived from the elements ali, meaning "other" or "foreign," and wīg, meaning "battle" or "warrior." It was borne historically in medieval southern France and northern Italy, where it developed as a regional feminine equivalent of the masculine Alois. The name is closely related to Aloysia, Luisa, and Louise, which share the same Germanic root through the Latinized form Ludovicus. The Blessed Aloïse de Montmorency, a thirteenth-century French noblewoman, helped establish the name's devotional use in Catholic tradition.
