Amelia is a Latinate name of Germanic origin, derived from the element amal, which referred to the Amal dynasty of the Ostrogoths and carried connotations of vigour and labour. It became widespread in Britain largely through the influence of the Hanoverian royal family in the 18th century, and was further popularized by Henry Fielding's 1751 novel of the same name.
