Baldwin

Baldwin comes from the Old High German name Baldawin, composed of the elements bald, meaning bold or brave, and wine, meaning friend. The name was carried to England by the Normans and became moderately common in medieval Europe, borne notably by several crusader kings of Jerusalem in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It fell out of general use in the English-speaking world after the medieval period but survives as a surname. Related forms include the Dutch Boudewijn and the French Baudouin.
