Barb is an English short form of Barbara, which derives from the ancient Greek word barbaros, meaning foreign or strange, originally used to describe those who did not speak Greek. The name was popularized in the Christian tradition largely through the legend of Saint Barbara, a martyred saint venerated since the early medieval period.
