feminine · English origin
Beth is an English short form of Elizabeth, which traces back through Latin and Greek to the Hebrew name Elisheba, meaning something along the lines of my God is an oath or my God is abundance. It came into widespread independent use as a given name in the nineteenth century, helped in part by the character Beth March in Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women. Related forms include Bette, Betsy, Betty, and Bess, all similarly derived from Elizabeth.
