Betty is an English diminutive of Elizabeth, which traces back through Latin and Greek Elisabet to the Hebrew name Elisheba, meaning something along the lines of my God is an oath or my God is abundance. The name has been in common use as an independent given name since at least the eighteenth century, when pet forms of Elizabeth such as Bess, Bessie, Beth, and Betsy were all popular in the English-speaking world. Betty enjoyed particular prominence in the United States during the early twentieth century, ranking among the most common names given to girls in the 1920s and 1930s.
