Buffy

Buffy is an English pet form and diminutive of Elizabeth, which itself derives from the Hebrew Elisheba, meaning something along the lines of my God is an oath or my God is abundance. It gained independent use as a given name primarily in the United States during the mid-twentieth century, carried in part by singer Buffy Sainte-Marie and later made widely recognizable by the fictional vampire slayer Buffy Summers from the 1990s television series. Related forms include Biff, Beth, Betty, and Libby, all of which share the same Hebrew root through Elizabeth.
