Buffy

Buffy is an English diminutive pet form of Elizabeth, itself derived from the Hebrew name Elisheba, meaning my God is an oath or my God is abundance. It developed as an informal nursery shortening, following the same pattern of sound substitution seen in other Elizabeth nicknames. The name gained wide popular recognition through the American television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1997 to 2003. Related forms include Betty, Betsy, Libby, and Eliza.
