feminine · Irish origin
Caitlin is an Irish form of Cateline, itself an Old French form of Katherine, which traces back to the Greek name Aikaterine, of uncertain but possibly pre-Greek origin; the name was long associated in the medieval period with Saint Catherine of Alexandria. It became widely used as an anglicized spelling of the Irish Caitlín, and gained broad popularity across the English-speaking world during the late twentieth century. Related forms include Katherine, Catherine, Karen, Katrina, and the Welsh Catrin.
