Catriona

Catriona is the Scottish Gaelic and Irish form of Katherine, ultimately derived from the Greek name Aikaterine, whose meaning is debated but commonly associated with the Greek word katharos, meaning pure. The name was borne throughout medieval Europe following the fame of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose veneration spread the name widely across Celtic-speaking regions. Robert Louis Stevenson brought particular literary attention to the Scottish form through his 1893 novel Catriona, the sequel to Kidnapped. Related forms include Katrina, Caitríona, and Katharine.
