Catriona is the Irish and Scottish Gaelic form of Katherine, ultimately derived from the Greek name Aikaterine, whose root meaning remains uncertain though it has long been associated with the Greek word katharos, meaning pure. The name has been in consistent use throughout Ireland and Scotland for centuries, carried by figures in Gaelic-speaking communities where it served as the vernacular equivalent of the Latin Katharina.
