Cicely is an English form of Cecilia, itself the feminine of the Roman family name Caecilius, which derives from the Latin caecus, meaning blind. The name gained widespread use in medieval England through devotion to Saint Cecilia, a second- or third-century martyr who became the patron saint of music.
